Android devices will also stop supporting the XR mobile app. On the same day, Samsung Gear VR and Windows Odyssey headsets will stop supporting the company’s VR video app. Oculus devices will no longer support the Samsung VR Video app starting on June 30th, and the Facebook-owned company will remove the application from its store, as well.įinally, Samsung will disable all XR user accounts and delete their data on September 30th. The tech giant has already suspended 360-degree video uploads and premium video purchases, and it won’t be rolling out any further updates. The tech giant says it’s ending the service, because it’s “rethinking its immersive video distribution” method, “especially given that Gear VR is no longer available.” Samsung’s XR ecosystem, which is made up of several apps, gives users a way to view 360-degree images and videos on their phones and links their VR headsets with their mobile devices. “We remain engaged with the ecosystem, exploring the potential of mobile AR and volumetric technologies,” the company says.Samsung will slowly shut down its XR service applications over the next few months until they’re completely gone by September 30th. Samsung says that with the XR pullback, that the company is “rethinking its immersive video distribution service, especially given that Gear VR is no longer available.” The Samsung XR mobile app will no longer be supported on Android devices, and will be removed from the Galaxy Store and Google Play. All Samsung XR user accounts will also be disabled and removed, which includes permanently deleting account information, associated data, and user videos published on the platform. The last nail in the coffin: on September 30th the company is pulling support for Gear VR and Windows VR headsets via the Mixed Reality Store.
